A coworker and I made it to Tuk and back again today. Driving on the ice road is pretty cool. Mostly it is snow covered this time of year, but there are some clear patches. There were also some rough patches, but for the most part you wouldn’t know that you weren’t driving on a snow covered paved road.

Tuk is a pretty cool place…pretty much as I imagined it actually. It is barren since it is above the tree line, but it seems to have a charm all its own. I didn’t get a chance to meet many of the people from there, so I can’t really comment on them, except to say that the ones I did meet were very friendly.

We saw two animals on the trip one Red Fox and one Lynx. Seeing the Lynx was a treat – it’s not every day you see one of them. Unfortunately both animals were far too fast for me to have gotten any pictures. You’ll have to content yourself with these:

This is a classic picture of the Arctic. Lots of hard packed snow and ice with the moon in the background. There's almost 100 metres of water right below us. Ignore the bonnet of the 4x4, 4 door, giganitic diesel pickup truck in the foreground!

This is a shot of a "Pingo". Just to keep you coming back for more, I won't tell you what a Pingo is...well...not yet. The sun in the picture is pretty indictive of what we get this time of year.

A shot of two Pingos close by. These pingos are just south of Tuk.

Another shot of the two Pingos, this time with the sun in the shot.

These are some houses in Tuk. This particular row was all green and nicely aligned.

Random shot #1 of Tuk...and the sun.

Random Shot #2 of Tuk, with a neat illumination of the sun on the clouds.

This is the ice road. It doesn't look like much, but it is basically a lifeline to the people that live in Tuk. The tourists love it too!

Random shot #3 - the frozen Arctic Ocean.

Random shot #4 - Tuk with sun.

Random Shot #5 - The last of the sun, Tuk, the Arctic Ocean.

Hope you enjoyed the photos. I'm off to Aklavik tomorrow. That’s all for now. More tomorrow.

Cheers!
