Date: November 20, 2005 - Kilometers Traveled: 840 Weather: Warm and sunny
We arrived in Swift Current, Saskatchewan at about 4:30PM local time. It was a great run today. We started out at ten minutes past seven this morning and managed to get in 840 kilometers. This was mainly due to two factors, the roads and the weather. The weather was great…sunny and warm. It was about 14 degrees Celsius, warmer than I would have expected for the prairies - a beautiful day to be sure. The Trans Canada Highway was basically divided the entire way from Winnipeg to here. I was amazed at how good the road was – wide, flat and straight with a speed limit of 110 km/h. That makes for some great driving!
They do trains here is Saskatchewan…lots of them! They are long and impressive. Here is a picture of one of the trains we saw. By the way, if I haven’t mentioned it before, Lorie gets all the credit for the pictures. She is usually in the passenger’s seat with the digital camera poised and ready for action!
The other thing they do well here is fields. Now I’m from Newfoundland, so if there is a clearing in the woods of a diameter of 100 meters…then that impresses me! When I first went to PEI, the size of their fields impressed me, but the gently rolling hills often obscured the true size of the field. Not true here in Saskatchewan, the terrain is so flat that the fields seem to go on forever. One field we estimated at 1000 metres by 750 metres – no trouble to play football in that one!
Our dog, Ripley, is traveling great. He spends most of his days in the back of the jeep taking in the sights, or else sleeping on the back seat. He is amazingly adaptive, and the situations that would aggravate and stress out most dogs – he takes in stride. We haven’t had a single issue with him yet. Here is a picture of Ripley – the amazing traveling dog (with Lorie)!
Well we didn’t see a whole lot of Saskatchewan, but it sure was a pleasure to drive across. Tomorrow it’s a short six hour jaunt to Calgary. Then the real fun begins!
Cheers for now!!

Hello my 3 wandering friends! Today is a little dreary here in old NS but still above 0!
Still attempting to finish that bridge of mine. Completion date estimated for Dec 23. When is it supposed to be finished you ask? Nov 15. That's my projects always on time!
Doing some trekking of my own this week. To Halifax tonight, Moncton Tues and Wed, Fredericton Thurs and home on Friday. Recruitment trip for TPW and also speaking to a high school physics class about engineering (Heather tricked me!!). Then off to home to pick up Mom who will be staying with me until Christmas.
Sounds like you are having a good trip. Getting along well each day. Montreal is always wonderful to drive through and you usually get to see more of it then you intend to! From the sounds of it you are now aware of what living in Illinois was like - flat!
The diary and pics are great! Good to see how you are doing as I think about you out there every day.
Take care of yourselves and I'll talk to you soon.
