December 2 - Pictorial Interlude
The Dempster Highway

Here are a sample of the pictures we took along the Dempster. Click on each one to get a larger version.

You can see how dark it was. Seeing a sign like this was a disturbing sight! Turns out it would take us more than six hours to get to those services.

It was not until after the noon hour that we were able to see the sun. Despite the limited time the sun was with us, it was a welcome sight.

Another picture of the sunrise. Lorie gets most of the photo credits on this Blog, but I am proud to say that I took these couple! See, I have skills!!

The trees are getting smaller and the frost is getting heavier. you can't tell from Lorie's picture, but it is cold here - damn cold!

Another landscape picture.

This is a picture of the road that we drove. We were happy to have the trees to guide us, it's hard to tell the road from the tundra.

Another picture of the snow covered Dempster. It's little more than a track ploughed though the Arctic tundra.

A wide angle shot of Lorie and Ripley at the crossing of the Arctic Circle. Note the treeless barrens in the background.

A closeup shot of Lorie at the Circle.

Me - pointing out the obvious!

An Arctic Red Fox with some caribou entrails left behind by hunters. This little guy put on quite a show for us - playing in the snow and running around. We got quite a few shots of "Red".

A closeup shot of the fox - he was actually yawning! Apparently we found the situation a little more interesting than he did!

After a few minutes, Red had had enough and he trotted off with his dinner.

Finally - our home Territory. It was dark by the time we got here and the flash from the digital camera is not that great - hence the poor quality shot - but you get the point.

If there had been more light we would have got more pictures. At any rate, that's it for now.

Cheers!

Wow!!!! what beautiful scenery. The Red Fox is such a beautiful animal, It seems he is daring you guys to try and take his dinner, or maybe he just likes getting his picture taken.
I can't believe Lorie is taking to the cold climate so well, seeing that I had to get the magic bag for her feet here in our rec room in august haha.
take care

Nice pics of the fox. I would have thought you would see arctic (no-red) foxes way up there.
